The Help
Posted by Kimberly at 11:12 AM Friday, December 24, 2010
When Jen and I decided to start a book club a few months ago, I really had no idea how much I would enjoy it. I had tried to be in a book club before through church, but we could only read "safe" (typically churchy) books as not to offend anyone, and it really wasn't that exciting.
So far in our book club, we've read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind, The Life of Pi, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, The Alchemist, and I just finished January's book, The Help. I have really enjoyed all the books, and the discussions that we've had at different restaurants around town. It has been so much fun to get together with friends once a month and have an intelligent conversation about the themes in the books, as well as just enjoy good company and good food.
Anyway, I just wanted to post quickly about the book The Help by Kathryn Stockett. Within the first few pages, I knew I was going to love the book. I know I've said before that my favorite genre is historical fiction, so this book about black maids working for privileged white families in Mississippi in the 1960's immediately caught my attention. Hearing the perspectives of the different maids throughout the book made me both laugh and cry. I couldn't put it down, reading at stoplights, in bed when I should have been asleep, even during commercials at the BSU-Utah football game :-) The book truly touched me, and I am so happy Brooke picked this book for us to read, and am looking forward to the movie coming out next year. I will be giving it 5 stars on Goodreads!

I love my book club
Posted by Kimberly at 6:33 PM Thursday, March 31, 2011I know I've blogged about book club before, but our book club dinner really has become one of my monthly highlights. Since I last posted about it in December, we've read Night, The Art of Racing in the Rain, and will be reading The Tiger's Wife this next month. We ate at Sa-Wa-Dee (Thai food) for our March book club meeting - I love Thai! And the book we read (The Art of Racing in the Rain) was one of my favorites that we've read too. So fun. And the people are all really great. We're going to miss Lance this summer while he is away!
Anyway, thought I'd post a couple more pictures from the evening. Carsten ate the flower that came as garnish on Brooke's plate, and you can't tell from the picture but Lance got a flaming chicken!

The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind
Posted by Kimberly at 10:36 PM Thursday, September 30, 2010
A couple months ago, Jen and I decided we wanted to start a book club, and tonight was our first official book club meeting! Jen, David, Lance, Carsten, and I met up at Cool Hand Luke's for some yummy food (although the service was extremely slow) and to talk about September's book - The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind. I picked the book because it is this year's campus read at Boise State. It is a true story of a boy who, amid famine and poverty, finds a book about windmills and decides to build one to produce electricity for his small African village. I really enjoyed the book and our conversation tonight, and am looking forward to October's book - The Life of Pi. In fact, I just picked the book up today at a used book store. I think that's the first time I've ever been into a used book store, but it's only a mile from my house and it was kind of fun getting my like-new book there.0 comments

Busy Week!
Posted by Kimberly at 12:02 PM Saturday, October 30, 2010
I'm not one to usually lump different events into one blog post, but I've had such a packed week I decided to go ahead and just post once for the entire week.
Monday
In case you forgot, I love Chuck. I was excited for fall because that meant Boise State football and the return of good television. Every Monday night, six of us get together for what we have nicknamed "Chuckaholics Anonymous". We bond together as we watch Chuck on the big screen (well my wall actually - with my projector).
Tuesday
The Bronco game was on Tuesday this week. We played Louisiana Tech, and it was a closer game than some of the last few games. There were also some exciting plays, including our quarterback Kellen Moore punting a ball and receiving a touchdown pass! Here's a picture of Mandy and me at the game - it was pretty chilly... funny to think that earlier this month I was wakeboarding!!!
Wednesday
Over my lunch break on Wednesday, I volunteered with some of my co-workers at Sustainable Futures. We spent the hour scraping labels off of old beer, wine, and liquor bottles so that they can be re-purposed into glasses, wind chimes, etc. It was neat to participate in the mission of Sustainable Futures and to get to know some of the other staff who work on campus.
Wednesday evening was our monthly book club gathering. We chose to eat at Bombay Grill to discuss this month's book - The Life of Pi. I decided I really like certain Indian food... I will be back!
Thursday
Thursday evening I attended the Idaho Governor Debates in the capitol building. I have never attended anything like this before, but I am trying to be a more involved, more informed citizen. I wasn't sure how enthralling it would be, but I ended up really enjoying it. I'm glad I went! Don't forget to vote next Tuesday!
Friday
Last night was the annual BYP Halloween carnival. We teamed up with the downtown YMCA to put on a carnival for the community. I was in charge of the mystery boxes... ya know - where you have to put your hand through a hole in the box and try to guess what's inside. We had old fingers (skinny pickles), intestines (cooked fettuccine noodles), witch's tongue (sliced hotdogs), dead skin (dry onion skin), spider legs (fuzzy pipe cleaners), eyeballs (large olives), brains (boiled whole tomatoes), and dragon droppings (raisins). The mystery boxes was in the "haunted house" - the rock climbing gym with spooky music and a strobe light. In addition to the haunted house, there was face painting, a bean bag toss, cake walk, hula hoop throw, slime station where you could make slime, spin art, a photo booth, etc. The night ended with an apple bob in the pool (does that sound totally disgusting to anyone else???) All in all, it was a great evening, and there were a ton of kids and families who came to enjoy the festivities.
Saturday
Today I am tired. I was up late every night this week. I would like to take a nap, but I need to clean my house (it's a disaster), go grocery shopping, do laundry, and prep for a Halloween get together we're having tomorrow... I'm obviously procrastinating by blogging :-) Oh well, we'll see what I can get done before the end of the day!
